Atherton is located in the Tablelands Region in the Far North Queensland and is approximately 80 km from Cairns, the nearest city. Atherton borders State Forest and is home to the fertile Tablelands region.
One of Atherton’s main industries is agriculture, growing a variety of crops including sugar cane, peanuts, mangoes, maize, potatoes, avacados and macadamia nuts. Dairy and beef cattle farms are found on the cool tropical plateau where temperatures and humidity are lower than on the coastal plains.
Cairns International Airport is approximately 50 km north east of Atherton and it is worth the drive to see what this town has to offer. Visit the Hou Wang Temple in Atherton’s Chinatown or explore The Empress at Crystal Caves, you won’t be disappointed with what Atherton has to offer.
