Visitors are welcome to stay at one of the resorts or campsites on the island, with a range of tours or 4WD hire available to keep you occupied. Also inhabiting Fraser Island are the famous dingoes. The dingoes are a protected species in the national park, and while considered a vital part of the ecosystem, should not be interfered with by visitors.
Between July to November, people flock in their thousands to visit the whale’s playground. While whales may pass through other areas, they linger in the Fraser Coast area on their 10,000km round journey. There are many whale watching cruises where you can be almost within reaching distance of the gentle giants.
While most visitors are attracted by what’s above the water, many are drawn by what lies underneath. The scuttling of the ex-HMAS Tobruk and the artificial reef in Wide Bay are one of the finest diving sites off the coast of Queensland. Join one of the many diving tours in the area to experience this wreck close-up.
To get to the Fraser Coast, you’re looking at around a 40-minute flight from Brisbane or 90-minutes from Sydney. It’s also reachable by car (3ish hours), bus or train, with access to Fraser Island by ferry.
