About Wollongong

Situated along the seaside, 80 km's south of Sydney lies Wollongong, Australia's ninth largest city with a population approaching 200,000 people. Located on a narrow coastal strip bordered by the Royal National Park to the north, Lake Illawarra to the south, and the Illawarra Escarpment to the west.

Dr Charles Throsby first established a settlement here in 1815, bringing down his cattle from the Southern Highlands to a lagoon of fresh water located near South Beach.

Also worth a visit, Wollongong City Gallery has one of the best regional art collections in NSW with a special focus on colonial, early Australian art and Aboriginal art. Wollongong has one University, Wollongong University and is also home to the WIN Entertainment Centre, home ground venue of St George Illawarra Dragons (National Rugby League team) and all their diehard supporters.
