About Rockhampton

Rockhampton is a city in Queensland that lies on the Fitzroy River, approximately 600 km's north of Brisbane. It is located on the Tropic of Capricorn and the Southern gateway to the Great Barrier Reef.

Founded in 1853, Rockhampton promotes itself as the "Beef Capital of Australia" with 6 bull statues dotted throughout the area as recognition of this title. The majesty of Rockhampton's historical architecture has captured the hearts of visitors for decades. Many fine public and private buildings, including the Customs House, old Post Office, cathedrals, banks, business houses and homes, are constant reminders of the city with a colourful past.

The Dreamtime Cultural Centre is also noted as Australia's largest Cultural Centre, set on some 30 acres of natural bush-land and ancient tribal sites featuring a "Torres Strait Islander Village" artifacts, guided tours and a Convention Centre. Popular with children is the Rockhampton Zoo which houses the rare Cassowary and the Capricorn Caves, Queenslands above ground spectacular limestone caves.
